What is Meibomian Gland Dysfunction?
MGD is a condition where tiny oil glands located in the eyelid do not produce enough quality oil (meibum) leading to tears evaporating too quickly.
Function of Meibomian Glands: The Meibomian Glands secrete the lipid layer of the tear film that prevents tears from evaporating too quickly
Causes: bacteria, mites, poor omega levels, poor blink, rosacea, medication and hormone imbalances are among common causes.
Symptoms: Grittiness, watery eyes, light sensitivity, burning, difficulty wearing contact lenses, eye fatigue, and more
Treatment Options Warm compresses, eyelid hygiene, oral supplements, gland expression, and intense pulsed light therapy

IPL stands for Intense Pulsed Light. It is a non-invasive procedure that uses pulses of light to stimulate and improve the function of the miebomian glands in the eyelids, which are responsible for producing the top layer of the tear film that prevents tears from evaporating too quickly, thereby alleviating dry eye symptoms by enhancing tear quality.
Reduce Inflammatory Mediators: Decrease the level of pro-inflammatory mediators to inhibit inflammation
Improve Tear Breakup Time: Significantly boost tear break up time and decrease osmolarity
Alleviate Abnormal Blood Vessels: Destroy the abnormal blood vessels that perpetuate inflammation
Restore Meibomian Glands: Improve meibomian gland morphology and functionality
Decrease Demodex: Decrease the population of Demodex Mites, which stimulate infection and boost the bacterial load on eyelids.

What to Expect with IPL
For best results, most patients receive 4 sessions spaced 2-4 weeks apart. Sessions last 10-15 minutes.
During your treatment, your eyes will be covered with shields or light blocking contact lenses.
A thin layer of coupling gel will be applied to the treatment area.
Optlight and IPL is applied to the skin of the eyelids and face
You may experience a warm sensation, bright light, and mild discomfort during the procedure
You may return to your daily activities and apply makeup straight away in most cases
Patients usually report an improvement after the 2nd or 3rd session
How Does IPL Work?
OptiLIGHT is a multi-factorial treatment for a multi-factorial disease. It addresses the disease by reducing major sources of inflammation leading to dry eye disease such as abnormal blood vessels, Demodex mites, and pro-inflammatory agents. OptiLIGHT restores the function of meibomian glands and delays evaporation of the tear film.
